Travelgram from America’s Oldest Winery

The Brotherhood Winery in Washingtonville, New York is known as the oldest operating winery in United States. It’s just an hour drive from NYC, so a perfect day trip option! We went there on a Saturday morning and signed up for their one hour tour and tasting, which costs just $10. Isn’t that amazing?

Our tour guide was a lady with immense knowledge about the history of the winery. She took us on a leisurely stroll of the vast network on underground cellars. She kept us entertained with some tall tales of folly and tragedy and reveled some secrets of the mysterious vaults. Fun fact: They produced their first commercial vintage in 1839!

The dimly lit cellars were excavated by hand in the late 19th century and house over two hundred oak barrels and feature a crested vault containing some of the oldest vintages in America.

By the end of the tour we were well acquainted with the complete wine making process and felt like an expert in the field 😉  It’s one of the best winery tours that I have experienced!

After the tour, we headed to the tasting area, to get the taste of some of the best wines they had to offer. We tried Reisling, one of their best selling wines and then moved on to some of the speciality and dessert wines. I’m not much of a wine lover, but my favorite was May Wine, made by combining fresh flowers of woodruff, strawberries and young wine-may be cause it was a bit more fruity than the other ones. And surprise – We got to keep the tasting glasses as souvenirs, Ah!

After the tasting, we headed to the shop area to shop some of the amazing wines that we had tasted. We were surprised that they were so reasonably priced! Most of them were in the range of $10-$12! 🙂

Overall, the atmosphere at the winery is amazing, the wines are fantastic and well priced, the tour is knowledgable and detailed – in short, its a great place! They have picnic tables set up, so carry your picnic baskets for an entire day of fun or head over to Woodbury Commons Premium Mall ( which is at a short 20 min drive from there) for some outlet shopping 😉
